WHY I MAKE ART

BY STEVEN R. BOYERS

Making art is the result of a need to express my feelings, and communicate my thoughts and ideas about life, existence, love, and beauty. This leads me to a sense of purpose for my artistic journey.

As an artist, I want to create works that evoke the senses of mystery and spirituality. I use them to uplift my feelings from the mundane and often troublesome fears and concerns about daily living; I always want to evoke an emotional response from the viewer of my work. My work does not have to be beautiful, although it helps to easily please an audience if it is beautiful, but it satisfies me if it is thought-provoking and interesting. My only failure is if my work fails to evoke a strong emotional or intellectual response.

Making art is a solitary, often contemplative process and leads me to long periods of introspection. Exhibiting art is the work of an extrovert. To try and do both is overwhelming at its core and the peril of seeking acceptance from others.

The first paintings displayed on this site are examples of my iconoclastic perspective and being largely self-taught, i.e., very little formal art training, I have used non-conformist materials such as re-purposed wood, or slate, with traditional media, but frequently applied with steel wool or toothpicks from the kitchen to create remarkably striking works of art. I balance these works with others that are traditionally painted works using paint brushes to create simpler, subdued, subtle, and more traditionally pleasing works.
